What is herpes?

Herpes is a virus that has plagued humans for centuries. It was actually described as “the disease that creeps” by Hippocrates 25 centuries ago. The name itself comes from the Greek word for “to creep.” Herpes was only recently separated into several categories, eight of them to be exact.

It is a malicious virus that can make itself invisible to the immune system, as though its coat were an invisibility cloak. Once in contact with a new host, the herpes virus quickly penetrates the nerve fiber and keeps “creeping” until it reaches the ganglion. That is where it makes its nest and where it can remain latent for a long time.

Herpes cannot survive on its own. It is a parasite living off of host cells. When it decides to replicate, i.e. to pass to an active state, it removes its coating and injects its DNA into a cell. Once inside, the herpes DNA uses the healthy cell’s resources to replicate itself. Once the cell has exhausted all its resources, it bursts, spreading the virus to neighboring cells. The immune system will control this infection after a few days, but the virus will remain silent in the ganglion until its next attack.

We do not know what triggers the attacks, even though those who have genital herpes, about 20% of the population, usually attribute them to stress, PMS or particular foods . Some studies suggest that social stress could trigger an outbreak, but nobody knows for sure.
